It’s so easy nowadays to get caught up in what’s trendy, and in the age of independent artists being able to produce and release work on one’s own, it’s hard to stand out when there’s so much content available at our fingertips. To find bands that might be a good fit, look up venues in your area that have capacities of around 200+, see who the headliners have been in the past, and pinpoint which ones usually open those shows. To see many of these techniques in action, plus more, I’ve created a short vignette in Ableton Live using stock instruments and plugins. If you don’t have access to Ableton, I can recommend Helm, Synth1, and the free products from Togu Audio Line as good starting points for your synth adventures. Happy LFOing!
One of Kaye’s signature riffs occurs here during the “I’m picking up good vibrations” refrain. By singer Mike Love’s own admission, he sang the notes of the vocal riff to double the bass riff, not the other way around, but the two parts sync so well together. Firstly, and courageously, they recorded everyone’s tracks to bpm-synced substitute beats (the performers hadn’t even heard the final beats until the record was mixed), deleted the source tracks and final mixes from all known hard-drives, and hid the album in a number of secure institutional locations around the world.
