As for taking oneself too seriously… If I wasn’t able to make fun of myself, especially considering what I’m trying to do with my life, I don’t think I’d be able to cope. That’s not to say I don’t take anything seriously, because that’s essential too. But at the end of the day, being able to throw your hands up and laugh when a project goes horribly awry, or bringing an attitude of openness and humor onstage, can make space for very magical things to happen out of the blue, and that’s what I love most of all.

The group was formed in 1966 by Mingiedi Mawangu, a member of the Zombo tribe. He began his musical career transcribing traditional Zombo music that was originally played by an ensemble of horns made from elephant tusks to be played on likembé. While he played with many different ensembles, it was his album, Congotronics (named after the way he’d jerry-rig different electronics together to make working parts) that eventually afforded him his international acclaim. In 2010, the band collaborated with Herbie Hancock on The Imagine Project and earned their first Grammy.

I also recommend looking for an amplifier with an open back if possible, since you’re going to need strength in the mid-range tones and not obfuscate the natural lows. Here are some of my favorite choices for the blues:

Rap albums to listen to

If you’re often writing or producing music alone, it can be really easy to lose perspective. Having a sounding board who is more experienced than you in a specific area can help you develop confidence in your artistic choices and build momentum for your musical journey. Speaking of doubling, here’s a great example of bass and vocals finding unison. Carol Kaye was a member of “the Wrecking Crew,” the famous group of LA-based studio musicians who played on numerous hit recordings throughout the ’60s and ’70s. Their cumulative work on several Beach Boys hits, including the legendary Pet Sounds album, is an important chapter in rock history.

Not every house show needs to be strictly acoustic, but most don’t provide the space or gear for earth-shattering volumes or fancy sound effects. These limited setups sharpen an artist’s performance skills and often lead to new creative interpretations of their music, and more comfort in one’s ability to make do.

Music psychologist Carol Krumhansl once argued that when we listen to a song, “How the parts are perceived depends on their functions in the whole.” So we’re going to hear a song differently depending on whether we hear the verse or the chorus first. And if we jump into a song halfway, we’ll get a completely different experience all together.

Part two of this groove is what I hear as C# Phrygian with a unique form. I’m going to call the “Someone said” and “Biggie” refrains part of the larger chorus, which would mean that the verses and choruses all have different lengths!

If you play two notes at a time, they will be connected by an orange line. If you play three or more notes at a time, they will form an orange shape. XLR microphones have an analog output, as opposed to the digital output of USB, which means they require a recording interface to record to your computer. But analog outputs can connect to external audio gear like mixers, which allow you to balance the level of multiple microphones when recording live, and utilize pre-amps if necessary to boost the gain at source.

I’ll let you in on an industry secret: Most voiceovers you hear on adverts, movies, and TV shows have been recorded by a pro voiceover talent from their home. How do I know this? Because I’ve personally set up a substantial amount of the country’s top voiceover talents’ studios in New York City over the last ten years. Unless you want to build a booth in a spare room (which I would recommend but it can get pricey), it’s usually easier and cheaper to use the tools you already have.
